Lux Antique Vanity Rescue

It’s a good feeling to rescue, transform, and beautify an absolute wreck of a piece. It’s been done many times throughout my painting career. They all give me good vibes. This one I’m particularly fond of.

She led me to believe the work would take forever. Removing the veneer was a good option until it was discovered the base wood material was insufficient to endure it. To deal with the warping, veneer bubbles were glued down then sanded – alot – to get them as smooth and flat as possible. The result isn’t perfect, but she will be loved again, warts and all.
After the veneer warping issues were minimized, the chips filled, smoothing out the edge nicks, primed using White Shellac, she finally received 2 coats paint with my favorite color – Rustic Oak by Magnolia Home – my DIY recipe. The top easily sanded down to bare wood, stained and finished using Clear Shellac – same with the legs. Gold highlights on the details and new ring drawer pulls are final touches.

She sold but not immediately. I suspect painted furniture has had it’s glory in world of modern trends but . . . a piece like this, which can’t be refinished also can’t be dumped in a landfill. I’ll keep painting.
